Donations for Carrefour, Haiti

SBU Physical Therapy program has been taking trips to Carrefour, Haiti (a “subdivision” of Port-au-Prince) since 2014. Our teams are led by current faculty or PT alumni and comprised of licensed PTs, student PTs, and non-medical family, friends, and other volunteers. Our long-term vision is to help create a sustainable rehabilitation effort in this resource-scarce area where access to quality health care is practically non-existent. We are moving forward in these efforts through consistent trips and building relationships in the same community, training and equipping local Haitians with the skills to treat and educate on basic health-care needs, and partnering with local churches and on-the-ground ministries to meet the specific needs of the local community. This July 2017 trip will be an exciting step forward as we plan to begin the work of having a permanent clinic space in this community with the goal of being locally run and operated in the near future! Each trip requires a lot of planning and preparation and gathering of supplies and donations to better serve the community. Here is a list of the needs we currently have:

PT Related Items:

  1. Generic “Crocs” (from Dollar General or Walmart) for both children and adults (new or gently used) HIGH NEED
  2. Athletic Shoes for both children and adults (new or gently used) – for the many people with inadequate footwear and subsequent foot pain/problems; also to be distributed with orthotics
  3. Therapy/Exercise Balls
  4. Pool Noodles
  5. Wheelchairs – these items are hard or impossible to obtain; need to be in decent working order or repairable
  6. Body Braces/Joint Supports/Orthotics, Ace Wraps, Tubigrip (sizes D-G priority) – for management of joint pain and disability; pre-fab or custom molded devices can be used
  7. Pediatric Rehab Supplies – walkers, orthotics, therapy equipment: anything is useful
  8. Exercise Bands – any tensions

General Medical/Hygiene Items

  1. Hand Sanitizer and/or Wipes; Liquid Hand Soap
  2. Baby items: formula, diapers, baby wipes, diaper rash cream
  3. Dandruff shampoo, triple antibiotic ointment
  4. Vitamins are always needed for both adults/children and infant drop vitamins
  5. Hygiene items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.
  6. Baby powder

General Items

  1. Bibles in Haitian Creole or French
  2. Picture bibles in French or Creole
  3. Soccer balls (deflated with air pump or flat-free/indestructible)
  4. L and XL athletic shorts for women
