Habakkuk

Habakkuk gives us something different this week. A personal account of one prophet’s struggle to understand why God does what he does, and God’s patient responses to a child that he loves. We get to see Habakkuk go from confused and hurt by his perception of God, to rejoicing when the truth of God’s character and plan are revealed.

Read Habakkuk 1:12-13
1. Do you ever see the terrible things that happen in this world and think, “how could God allow this?” If so, what is hard for you? If you don’t ever struggle with this, why don’t you?

Read Habakkuk 2:2-4
2. God is against the proud, but with the faithful. What do you think a prideful approach to God and his plans looks like vs a faithful approach? Particularly in the context of the incredible difficulty that the Jews are going through at the time of Habakkuk.

3. Chapter 2 is God assuring his people that he will by NO MEANS overlook evil in the world and evil against his people. Yet that doesn’t change the fact that they will suffer greatly during this time. Do you think you trust God with judgment, vengeance, and justice, particularly when it has caused you pain? If no, where do you struggle? If yes, how do you manage that trust?

Read Habakkuk 3:13, 16-19
4. In Chapter 3 Habakkuk remembers all the ways that God has been faithful to them over the centuries. When everything seems to be falling apart, when your body trembles and fear makes you feel as if you have rot in your bones, how can you rejoice and find joy in the God of your salvation?
